Kyphoplasty (Balloon Vertebroplasty)
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive repair for a vertebral compression fracture. It helps bring back the spine's natural shape, and some patients feel pain relief soon afterward.
Preparation
You are given anesthesia. Using a special live x-ray called a fluoroscope to guide the way, the physician passes a needle through the skin of your back and into the broken vertebra.
Inflating the Balloon
A balloon is passed through the needle into the vertebral body and carefully inflated to push the broken bone outward. When the balloon is deflated and removed, it leaves a hollow space in the center of the vertebra. Some patients need more than one needle and balloon.
Stabilizing the Fracture
Bone cement is injected through the needle to fill the hollow space. As it hardens inside the vertebra, it stabilizes the fracture.
After the Procedure
The needle is removed and the small opening in the skin is closed. Your doctor will give you instructions to help you recover.
