Laminectomy (Cervical Spine, With Fusion)
This surgery relieves pressure on the spinal nerves in the neck caused by spinal stenosis. The laminectomy gives the compressed nerves more room, and implants then stabilize the spine.
Preparation
You are given anesthesia so you sleep through surgery. The surgeon makes an incision on the neck to reach the vertebrae.
Relieving the Pressure
To give the nerves more space, the lamina is removed from some vertebrae. The lamina is the section of bone that forms the back of each vertebra. Bone spurs, herniated discs, or anything else pressing on the nerves are corrected at the same time.
Fusion
Last, implants are placed to lock the vertebrae together and stabilize the spine.
After Surgery
The incision is closed and bandaged, and you may wear a neck brace to keep your head still. You are monitored in a recovery room as you wake up, and your surgeon will tell you when it is safe to go home. Follow your surgeon's instructions as you heal.
