Lumbar Disc Microsurgery
Lumbar disc microsurgery is a minimally invasive procedure that takes pressure off nerve roots pinched by a herniated disc. It can relieve sciatica pain.
Preparation
You are given anesthesia. Through a small incision in the back, the surgeon moves muscle and tissue aside to reach the spine, then makes a small window in the lamina, the bone that covers the spinal canal. Instruments are passed through this window.
Relieving the Pressure
The nerves are gently moved aside and the herniated part of the disc is removed, relieving the painful pressure. The rest of the disc stays in place to keep cushioning the vertebrae.
After Surgery
The instruments are removed and the incision is closed. Your surgeon will give you instructions for your recovery.
